We will start by sculpting five structures located on the medial-ventral side of the ventricular model: 1) Thalamus, 2) Hypothalamus, 3) Pituitary Gland, 4) Optic Chiasm, and 5) Mammillary Bodies. These structures are easily recognisable in brain sections (transverse, coronal, or sagittal) and form the starting and/or ending points of various neural circuits, such as the circuit of Papez and the optic system.
- Thalamus (red): Model a red stick and place it through the opening in the 3rd ventricle. Then form two red spheres and place them laterally to the 3rd ventricle.
- Hypothalamus (green): Shape two green triangles and place them directly under both thalami (red). Then press the two points of the hypothalamus together in a frontal direction, forming the neural part of the pituitary gland.
- Pituitary Gland (purple): Shape a purple sphere as the adeno-part of the pituitary gland and place it directly against the green extension of the hypothalamus. Both structures form the pituitary gland, with the green clay representing the neural part and the purple clay representing the adeno-part.
- Optic Chiasm (yellow): Form an ‘X’ from yellow clay. Place the ‘X’ in front of the pituitary gland and have the caudal parts of the ‘X’ emerge laterally from the thalamus. The frontal side of the ‘X’ represents the optic nerves (optic nerve (II)), and the caudal part represents both optic tracts ending in the lateral geniculate nucleus (LGN).
- Mammillary Body (light blue): Form two spheres and place them posterior to the pituitary gland, just below the hypothalami.
