Activating Psychology Students Through Self-Directed Learning

About the project
The course Methoden Professioneel Handelen (Methods of Professional Practice) within the Bachelor’s programme Psychology has been completely redesigned, by moving from a traditional format of lectures and seminars with assignments to an interactive, self-directed learning module. In collaboration with the Examination Board we shortened the course from eight to six weeks, making it more intensive yet also more efficient. This resulted in an ambitious but successful format in which 600 students participated in poster presentations instead of taking traditional written exams.
Students now prepare at home through e-learning modules in Brightspace, which combine theory and assignments. These modules are designed to encourage active participation and independent learning. During the seminars, students work in teams on assignments, promoting collaboration and the practical application of knowledge.
Within the module, students can choose whether to read the material or listen to it. In some cases, they are required to complete the theory component before proceeding to the team assignment. This new approach has led to a successful and well-appreciated learning experience, enabling students to develop their professional attitude and skills more effectively than in a traditional course format.
