Visualising Healthcare with 360° Video
Virtual Reality, Video, UMC
About the project
Using the software tool CenarioVR, we contributed to the development of several VR scenarios for Radboudumc. Scenarios were created for four areas of healthcare: acute care (Emergency and Intensive Care departments), Definitive Surgical and Anaesthetic Trauma Care (DSATC), infection prevention and acute obstetrics. These scenarios were designed and developed through intensive collaboration between subject-matter experts from Radboudumc, educational support staff from Radboud Health Academy and our team.
Medical students can work through the scenarios using VR headsets as well as via Brightspace. The 360-degree video technology used in these VR scenarios enables learners to experience situations that are otherwise inaccessible or difficult to practise. For example, the ICU module begins with a virtual visit to the ward. This was closed to student access in 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Using technology, the educational experience that would otherwise have been lost was restored. Even offering insight into an ICU under exceptional circumstances such as lockdown and quarantine.
The aim of the Emergency Department module is to capture the entire chain of emergency care: from the deployment of the Mobile Medical Team (MMT), to arrival at the emergency department, through radiology for diagnostics and ultimately to admission to the ICU. We contributed by producing recordings and programming the modules in CenarioVRas well as facilitating the practical sessions that took place in the TvA building.

More about this project
In addition to the technical implementation, we also provided instructional design for the other scenarios based on the learning objectives of the respective programmes. For instance, the acute obstetrics scenario takes place in a home setting where a baby has just been born and the mother experiences a hemorrhage. Under time pressure, the student must decide how to act by making choices and performing procedures according to protocol, using the standard equipment available. This creates a safe learning environment for a situation that is otherwise difficult to experience, while allowing students to see the consequences of their actions.
The infection prevention scenario demonstrates how nurses should correctly follow hygiene procedures. Students immediately see the consequences of their actions. For example, where they have spread pathogens through illuminated handprints. This makes often complex written procedures and the invisible nature of infections more tangible and understandable.
The DSATC scenario was recorded during a complex surgical procedure that is difficult to stage and allows participants to switch perspectives to experience how communication breakdowns occur. For example, during the operation the anaesthetist may miss an important message from the surgeon without the surgeon realising it. By viewing the situation from different perspectives, learners experience what each professional sees (and what they do not see) highlighting the importance of effective communication and collaboration.
This collaboration helps Radboud Health Academy and Radboudumc to provide healthcare professionals with a broader perspective on their field. The VR scenarios are actively promoted by the Radboud Health Academy and have also generated significant interest in other medical domains and healthcare institutions.
