Distance assessment, explanation

Because of the corona pandemic, a lot of lecturers have to reshape their existing education in order to facilitate online learning and assessment. The Team Educational Design & Technology aims to support lecturers by sharing examples of suitable education design.

Two key questions to ask yourself when redesigning your course are:

  1. What is the main goal of my course?
  2. How can I see whether this goal has been obtained?

Once these two questions have been answered there will be a lot of ways to design your education. We have noticed that particularly the second question is more difficult to answer, because the online alternatives for a ‘classic exam’ are often about preventing fraud. This does not match with what many lecturers wish to create for their students: an open learning climate, focused on trust, learning from one another, and providing feedback; this allows students to learn from their mistakes and improve themselves.

Together with several lecturers we have collected examples of online assessment tools where the focus is not on preventing fraud but rather on the learning process. We have searched for examples that are also suitable for larger groups of students and that are easy to implement.
