Publication on vision, experience, and method with 360 videos in education

Virtual Reality (VR) is a powerful medium that is on the rise because of recent technological development. Experiencing images with VR-goggles can create the feeling of a mental and physical presence at the situation that you are watching. Because of the 360 degrees recording, you can watch all around you and decide for yourself where you are looking at. This makes for a realistic and natural experience. As if you are really there.

To find out in what way VR can be of added value to education, we wrote a project proposal for the SURF Innovation Challenge 2016-2017. Our proposal was one of the five winning projects. We could conduct our research with the awarded amount. You can read more about the recordings we made then in this interview by ScienceGuide.

We wanted to include situations in which we could take the students with us to a learning situation in a relatively straightforward way. This technique can be valuable within behavioural sciences, teacher training, legal training, medical training, and other studies where observing in complex or difficult to access situations can add to the students’ learning process.

We published the results from our research in the book 360 degrees video in education – experience it now. In this book, we explain our work method and describe the situations in which 360 degrees video can offer educational benefits relative to existing educational resources. In addition, we describe the recording process and the technical aspects that must be taken into account. Because of the fast technological developments, some of the described techniques are now obsolete. We publish updates about current developments in the showcase regarding VR, AR, and XR.

The book 360 degrees video in education is still giving us new contacts who want to help us develop VR applications for education.
